Red, For All Handkind
“Anger ... it's a paralyzing emotion ... you can't get anything done. People sort of think it's an interesting, passionate, and igniting feeling — I don't think it's any of that — it's helpless ... it's absence of control — and I need all of my skills, all of the control, all of my powers ... and anger doesn't provide any of that — I have no use for it whatsoever." - Toni Morrison
Anger. I have dissected this emotion for years now as I’ve slowly allowed myself to feel it, slowly learned how to move through it. Writing, running... This is a part of my process with this paralyzing and falsely passionate emotion. After the overturning of Roe v. Wade, I found myself going to the page once again. // “Write, write. Let the words bleed (too).”// A piece of my writings during this time included the words, “All I see is red. All I feel is red,” with the culminating line reading, “Now, you will feel red.”
Red was dreamt up one night at the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio with Artist Matt Jacob for For All Handkind’s Summer Camp Art Show in solidarity with the Hampton Roads Reproductive Justice League. It includes pieces of my writings engraved over and over on the magic Matt creates with neon.
