A Spoonful of Sugar, The Chrysler Museum of Art

Mixed Media: Wool, Antique Spoons, Crushed Glass

Inspired by the song from the movie Mary Poppins, A Spoonful of Sugar highlights our country’s growing pains as we continue to confront our past while trying to create and define our identity. As in the song, the first polio vaccine was administered with a cube of sugar and was met with the same trepidation our world faced during the Covid-19 pandemic. This installation highlights the power education has in molding present and future generations, with the potential to perpetuate the same cultures and divisiveness that stem from a shameful history and continued master narrative. A sugar-coated curriculum built from a country’s sugar-coated history. Our country’s identity, sugar-coated. Perhaps a spoonful of sugar helps the history go down.
