Mixed media: Salvaged Car Side Mirrors, Neon
Eyes Forward uses reflection and perspective to ask important questions regarding our individual impact on the environment and suggests what Earth’s future might be. One wall consists of an assemblage of old side view vehicle mirrors that contain the well-known printed message to drivers that “OBJECTS IN MIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR.” Panning out, viewers can see a reflection in the mirrors from the neon side on the opposing wall that reads, “THE END.”
The mirrors allow viewers to see their individual reflection, which symbolize the role each individual plays in impacting the environment. Viewers are asked to consider their own responsibility, their choices and actions, and contemplate actions moving forward - alone and collectively. Will you settle for defeat and focus on the end staring brightly at you in your face? Or will you keep your eyes forward, on the road ahead, focusing on possibilities and solutions for the future?
